Old Post Office Plaza: Unique and Intimate
Nearly 200 supporters gathered at 9th & Locust to celebrate the opening of downtown's newest open space, Old Post Office Plaza. The new 30,000 square-foot open space is in the heart of the central business district and was formerly a surface parking lot.

The award-winning design incorporates extensive landscaping and water features with a sculpture "Torso di Ikaro" by Artist Igor
Mitoraj as its focal point. Development of The Plaza was identified as a key component of revitalization of the Old Post Office District in the 1999 Downtown Development Action Plan.
Funding for the project is a total of $8.8 Million and includes support from the Danforth Foundation, the US Bancorp Community Development Corporation, the St. Louis Brownsfields Cleanup Fund (via SLDC) and the Gateway Foundation. The Gateway Foundation additionally funded the design fees and will install and maintain the sculpture. The budget includes funding for active and ongoing programming including lunchtime and evening music, theater, street performers, weekend markets, film series, special events and much more.
