Downtown Dining on Display

The annual Downtown St. Louis Restaurant Week returns the week of August 3rd thru 9th.  Restaurant Weeks are a vital part of over 30 major cities' annual schedule of events.  This year 25 of downtown's finest dining establishments will offer a special three-course dinner dining promotion for a fixed price of $25 per person, plus tax and tip. There are no passes to buy, coupons to carry or cards to punch. Patrons simply attend the participating restaurant of their choice from Monday August 3rd - Sunday August 9th.  As part of the promotion, restaurants will also offer the Restaurant Week sponsors' Terrazas De Los Andes wines for $7 per glass.

Restaurant Week includes the following (25) fine dining establishments: 400 Olive (Hilton Hotel), An American Place, Anthony's, Asia (Lumiere Place), Beechwood Bistro (Union Station), Burger Bar (Lumiere Place), Carmine's Steak House, Charlie Gitto's, Cielo (Four Seasons Hotel), Clark Street Grill (Westin Hotel), The Drunken Fish, The Dubliner, F15teen, Gio's, Harry's, House of Savoy (Lumiere Place), J. Buck's, Kitchen-K , Lombardo's Trattoria (Drury Union Station), Lucas Park Grille, Mike Shannon's, Mosaic, Red Kitchen & Bar (Hyatt), Ruth's Chris Steakhouse (Hyatt), and Top of the Riverfront (Millennium Hotel).

Downtown Restaurant Week (DRW) also boasts a charity tie-in with Operation Food Search, the largest distributor of free food in the bi-state area helping to feed the impoverished. DRW patrons have the option of adding a $5 "Extra Helping" donation to their dining bill. The 2008 DRW helped raise nearly $6000 for this cause.  For more information including menu choices, click here.

Citygarden Becomes Major Attraction

The openly accessible 3 acre Citygarden opened a month ago to considerable acclaim and has quickly become the "Urban Oasis" it was promised to be.  At any given day and hour the Citygarden is a playground for children playing in the fountains, or a quiet haven for workers and tourists enjoying the art, reading books or just relaxing in the garden.

Gateway Foundation invested nearly $30 million into the two-block city owned garden which is part of the Gateway Mall and located between 8th and 10th and Market and Chestnut Streets. Highlights of the public garden include impressive landscaping, three fountains and pools, a six-foot waterfall, places to sit or stretch out, a state-of-the art spray plaza with 102 computer-controlled spray jets and custom lighting, twenty-four sculptures, a audio tour of the garden accessible by cell phone or internet and so much more. Later this month Jim Fiala plans to open a beautiful glass pavilion café called the Terrace View offering lunch and dinner with indoor and outdoor seating.

The success of the Citygarden hopes to inspire development for the rest of the Gateway Mall. A full list of features and photos can be found by clicking here.

Power House Awarded LEED Gold

Cannon Design, an internationally recognized architectural and engineering firm, relocated their St. Louis regional offices to the Powerhouse Building at 1106 Clark Street in 2008.  As a result of their commitment to sustainability, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) awarded the building a LEED® Gold Status.

Cannon Design's adaptive reuse of the Powerhouse involved creating a three-story tall interior gallery, an exterior 3,500 square foot urban garden, exterior restoration, windows replacement maintaining the original masonry openings, and the interior space completely rehabilitated.  Two partial levels were constructed, adding to the existing two floors and rooftop penthouse, resulting in a total of 32,000 square feet of office and conference space.  The Powerhouse is part of the Municipal Service Building complex, occupying an entire city block bounded by Clark, Spruce, 11th and Tucker streets.

The Powerhouse was originally built in 1923 to supply steam heat to four new public buildings as well as eight additional city buildings funded by an $87 million bond issue.  The Powerhouse also supplied steam for the Kiel Auditorium, the largest steam jet cooling system in the U.S. in the mid-1930s.
