 Ely Walker Lofts Goes Rental

In 2006, over $49 million was invested in the 319,800 square foot Ely & Walker Dry Goods warehouse to convert it to a mixed use property. The historically registered building at 1520 Washington Avenue has now re-emerged as the Ely Walker Luxury Rental Lofts.

Features of the building include two six-story atriums with fountains, a roof top deck, fitness center, and community party room. Interior features include; refinished 100 year old hardwood floors, large windows with spectacular views, high barrel ceilings, exposed red brick, spiral duct work and in-unit washer/dryer. Lofts range from 1,000-1,600 square feet and start at $995. Underground garage parking and storage are also available.

The building is also home to English Living and the London Tea Room. For more information on leasing at The Ely Walker Lofts, click here or call 314.436.7400. To learn more about English Living and the London Tea Room, click here.

Elementary Students to Plant Roses at Fr. Filipiak Park

Several Urban Roots donors, including the Regional Business Council, Anheuser Busch, and the Mayor's Ball, have provided funding for this year's landscape improvement projects and are ending the season with a joint project at Patrick Henry Elementary Academy. The project entails the planting of 160 roses at Fr. Filipiak Park across from the school.

The highly visible location is right along the 10th Street entrance into downtown Louis and amidst a new development project, Cambridge Heights, to the north. The rose planting at Fr. Filipiak Park will provide enhanced curb appeal along 10th Street to commuters, bike riders and users of the park itself.  The elementary students will plant the roses with volunteers and use the garden as a laboratory for learning about the importance of caring for flowers and much more.

Urban Roots is a partnership of non-profit organizations working to enhance the downtown landscape. Projects have included City Hall gardens and flower boxes, Tucker medians, Market Street medians; planters at Poelker Park; hanging baskets along Tucker and Market; the gardens at Serra Sculpture Park and at Kiener Plaza. Urban Roots partners include the Flora Conservancy, Gateway Greening, Operation Brightside, Partnership for Downtown St. Louis and St. Louis Parks Department. For more information on Urban Roots, contact Patrice Gillespie Smith, Downtown Partnership, 314.436.6500 ext. 231 or by clicking here.

Partnership for Downtown St. Louis - new name and logo

Throughout the strategic planning process with the Downtown Partnership Board of Directors, it became increasingly important to all involved that the organization reposition itself as THE private sector voice of downtown St. Louis and to advance downtown's vital role to a healthy region.

As such, we have adopted a new name and logo, the Partnership for Downtown St. Louis. The changes to the name indicate that our organization is a strong partner in downtown revitalization and downtown St. Louis is widely supported and celebrated by regional and national partners. Our new logo reflects the partnership theme by showing an arch that reaches into the region and serves as a partner to all of those interested in a strong downtown and healthy region.

With this new look, you can expect to see and hear more from the Partnership about what is happening downtown -- the accomplishments and the challenges. Before we launch a major marketing campaign, we will be conducting research to determine current perceptions and to identify what people want most for downtown. We welcome comments from everyone in the region.

Cannon Design Relocates to Historic Power House

In early September Cannon Design relocated their offices into the newly renovated and historic landmark the St. Louis Municipal Power House at 600 Clark. Cannon Design purchased the building in 2007 and provided all design, development and construction management services for the project. "This investment represents both our confidence in the growth of our practice as well as our confidence in our City," says M. Kent Turner, President, Cannon Design North America.

Constructed in 1928 to house boilers providing steam to numerous municipal office, court and convention facilities, the building stood vacant for nearly 30 years. Every component of the building's interior is new and designed both to current life-safety codes as well as US Green Building Council standards for environmental sustainability. Designated as a landmark by the National Historic Register, the "Revival style" exterior has been fully restored. The concept of "mezzanines" has preserved the signature, arched windows on the north and east elevations and provided wonderful gallery and exhibit space for the firm and the community.

Cannon Design St. Louis has numerous projects recently recognized by local, state and regional awards, including the Saint Louis University Edward A. Doisy Research Center; University of Alabama, Birmingham Campus Recreation Center; Life Sciences Innovation Center and Multidisciplinary Research Building at the University of Kansas; Veterans Administration Cleveland Cares Tower; and Washington University Stoffer Science Center.

 Lindenwood University Opens Downtown Campus
The newest addition to Lindenwood University's Lindenwood College for Individualized Education (LCIE) program is the opening of a new downtown campus at 1409 Washington Avenue. Occupying 6300 square feet on the 3rd floor, the new campus includes six full-size high-tech classrooms, a computer lab, a recreational area for student use, and a modern décor.

Lindenwood decided to open a downtown location due to the revitalization that has taken place as well as the increasing number of people who work downtown and might be open to an evening class schedule. The campus will also serve as the closest location for residents of neighboring areas such as Soulard, Lafayette Square, and the Central West End. For more information on the LCIE program and the St. Louis City Campus, please contact Joanna Schlotman at 314.621.1179.

Arcturis Recommits to Downtown St. Louis

Arcturis, a multi-disciplined design firm that has been located in downtown St. Louis for 15 years, has moved from their corporate office previously located at 1910 Pine Street to the Laclede Gas Building at 720 Olive Street.

The firm built out over 45,000 square feet of space on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building and designed the space to be green and sustainable with the intent to pursue LEED certification.

Features of the space include a living green wall equipped with grow lights, unique/signature orange concrete sinks and 12' tall steel doors designed by local artists, high technology throughout with A/V, special lighting, moveable walls and open collaborative spaces, Wii room, private rooms for personal time, large kitchen, showers and bicycle lockers.  The Partnership's Endorsements

Proposition A

The Partnership for Downtown St. Louis has endorsed Proposition A, the Schools First Initiative, which will provide new funding for schools, protect local jobs and benefit the economy by updating Missouri's outdated casino regulations. Proposition A, on the Nov. 4 statewide ballot, increases the state gaming tax casinos pay, which is dedicated to schools by the state constitution. Prop A also adds new legal protections to ensure that these funds can only be used to increase school funding and cannot be used to supplant other education funds. And, it eliminates Missouri's so-called $500 loss limit - an arbitrary casino spending limit which does not exist in any other state.

 Proposition M

The Partnership also approved the county ballot measure for More Metrolink.
This proposition encourages that the next priority corridor for Metro after the County extensions be the Northside-Southside Connector - a vital link to the region's light rail network. Proposition M will be on the St. Louis County's November 4th Ballot Initiative to expand Metro's light rail network and improve maintenance on its existing public transit facilities. The estimated $80 million in annual revenues generated by the measure will also prevent drastic cuts in both bus and Metrolink service in the County and City that are projected to go into effect in 2009 if Metro is unable to replace its funding cuts.

Twelve volunteers from the Downtown Webster campus at the Old Post Office dedicated time on their national volunteer day, WebsterWorksWorldwide, toward planting two trees and 32 shrubs at 13th and Washington. This is the 6th year the group has selected downtown as a beautification focus.

 I-64 Construction Ahead of Schedule

MoDot has announced that Phase I of the I-64 construction project between I-270 and 170 is ahead of schedule and will reopen between late November and New Years Eve, also the same day of the eastern half closure. The east half of I-64 will close between I-170 and Kingshighway through December 31, 2009 at the latest. For more information on the I-64 project, click here.

 I-64 Phase II Luncheon

Information sharing and preparations for the closure of the 2nd half of I-64 are underway. Are you prepared for the next phase of construction? The Partnership for Downtown St. Louis will host a luncheon on October 22, 2008 at Noon where individuals can hear directly from MoDOT and the City of St. Louis what the plans are. Topics will include which major roads will be impacted, the best ways to access downtown, how City streets will accommodate additional cars, the alternatives you have to driving and how businesses can tell their customers they're still open. To register for this event, click here.
