 Ground Broken for City Garden

The City of St. Louis and Gateway Foundation have partnered to develop the City Garden - a unique 2.9 acre sculpture and landscape public garden on the Gateway Mall. The City Garden will be built on the two blocks between Eighth and Tenth and Chestnut and Market Streets.

Gateway Foundation will pay more than $20 million for the design and construction of the garden, including state-of-the art lighting, ongoing maintenance, security, and insurance expenses. The City will own the garden improvements, providing water and electricity, and will continue to own the land. Features of the garden will include three impressive water features, a café overlooking the garden, an eight-foot limestone wall, a state-of-the-art LED video wall and much more.

The project is scheduled to be completed by July 2009. Other downtown projects the Gateway Foundation played a significant role in include the Gateway Mall Master Plan, Old Post Office Plaza, lighting of the Gateway Arch, Old Courthouse, Civil Courts Building and the development of Triangle Park at Clark and 14th Streets.

 Art Saint Louis Moves

Art Saint Louis, a nonprofit gallery and organization with a continual presence in the downtown community for over 20 years, is relocating to the 555 Washington Avenue building.

The new 7,000 square foot space will feature 17' high ceilings, a combination of wood floors and epoxy floors and a drop-down open ceiling grid that incorporates both tracks with track lighting and ambient lighting fixtures. The increase in square footage from their previous location will allow for larger single exhibitions or a presentation of both a small and a large exhibition at the same time.

Art Saint Louis' new space has been vacant for over 10 years. The space previously housed another gallery in the early 1990s, the Forum for Contemporary Art now known as the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis in Grand Center. The entire 555 Building has gone through several incarnations from department stores, to the Post Office, and now boasts numerous creative enterprises such as Rivet (previously Zippatoni) and In Fuz.

The public is invited to attend the Art Saint Louis Preview Party on Thursday, June 5, 2008 from 5:30 - 8:00 pm and the Grand Opening Reception Saturday evening June 7th from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. The opening of the new space will feature the new exhibit "Patterns and Pixels" juried by Mark Douglas and Ken Anderson, music by Little Anodyne and the Red Wallpaper and wine by Michelle Winery.
