Live Downtown! - Spring Downtown Living Tour

The annual Spring Downtown Living Tour will be held on Saturday and Sunday, May 3 & 4 from noon to 5 pm. The tour will include over 28 diverse condominium and apartment properties that feature a variety of housing styles from traditional high rise to contemporary lofts and historic renovations to all new construction.

With increased housing options available and an ever growing array of shops, restaurants, entertainment, services and amenities, it's not surprising that downtown St. Louis has attracted over 4,000 new residents who have discovered the convenience, value and excitement of downtown living.

The Downtown Living Tours have grown too, annually attracting over 2,000 visitors who experience a taste of downtown living while exploring distinct residential communities. The Central Business District, Post Office Square, the Washington Ave. Garment District, Downtown West, Cupples Station/Ballpark District and the Civic Center District will all have properties represented on the tour.

Tickets for the tour are just $7.00 and can be purchased on the day of the event or on line through MetroTix. The tour starts at either of two locations: the corner of 10th & Olive Sts in The Syndicate building or the corner of 21st & Washington Ave. in The Tudor Lofts. While guests are encouraged to walk, free shuttle busses are also available to provide close access to all stops on the tour. Metered parking is free downtown on the weekends and complimentary parking will also be provided in designated lots.

The tour is produced by the Downtown St. Louis Partnership and Community Improvement District and presented by Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. Co-Sponsors are the St. Louis Association of Realtors and Webster University Downtown Campus. The Riverfront Times and Emmis Communications are media sponsors.

For more information on the Downtown Living Tour click here or call 314-436-6500.  For information on other event happenings during the tour weekend, see the "Downtown Fun" section below.

Canon Design Moving to the Powerhouse

Cannon Design, an internationally recognized architectural and engineering firm, is relocating their St. Louis offices to the Powerhouse Building at 1106 Clark Street. For the 17 past years, Cannon Design has been located atop One City Centre but needed more space due to employee growth.

Cannon Design plans an $8 million adaptive reuse of the Powerhouse. The project will create a three-story tall interior gallery, an exterior 3,500 square foot urban garden, and attain a LEED Silver Rating for sustainable design. The exterior will be restored, the windows replaced maintaining the original masonry openings, and the interior space completely rehabilitated. Two partial levels will be constructed, adding to the existing two floors and rooftop penthouse, resulting in a total of 32,000 square feet of office and conference space. The Powerhouse is part of the Municipal Service Building complex, occupying an entire city block bounded by Clark, Spruce, 11th and Tucker streets.

The Powerhouse was originally built in 1923 to supply steam heat to four new public buildings as well as eight additional city buildings funded by an $87 million bond issue. The Powerhouse also supplied steam for the Kiel Auditorium, the largest steam jet cooling system in the U.S. in the mid-1930s.

 Clean Team Goes Green

The St. Louis Cardinals, St. Patrick Center and Downtown St. Louis Partnership have teamed up to launch a "green" environment around Busch Stadium before and after the ballgames. The program consists of the Downtown Partnership's six "Green" Clean Team members emptying all trash receptacles around the stadium including the tall silver recycle bins (for all paper, aluminum and plastic products).

The new "Green" Clean Team is an extension of the Downtown Partnership's ongoing Litter Patrol Program. Employees are hired through the St. Patrick Center employment program that helps to end homelessness through employment and permanent housing solutions. "Our Clean Team has a proven track record of quality service and they are a key reason why Downtown St. Louis is considered one of the cleanest urban areas in America," said Jim Cloar, President and CEO of The Downtown St. Louis Partnership. "This vision of the Cardinals is a first bold corporate move to recycle street trash in downtown and we hope to grow this pilot program to various other venues and events in our city. It's the right thing to do," Cloar added. The Clean Team program, started in 2002, has helped dozens of homeless people gain meaningful employment while delivering an important community service.

 Scoop the Poop

The Downtown Community Improvement District and the Downtown Residents Association have partnered to encourage dog owners to pick up after their pets with the newly launched Downtown Canine Litter Campaign.

The campaign will kick off the weekend of April 18th with volunteers canvassing the streets. While wearing matching T-shirts, they will be distributing free dogchain bag dispensers, informational brochures and posters to create awareness about the program. The Downtown CID has also placed 25 "Scoop the Poop" doggie doo bags around downtown in highly dog populated areas to make pickup easier. Click here for the dispenser map.

St. Louis City Ordinance number 66384 specifies in section 10.04.310 that every dog owner/guardian shall remove any feces left on any sidewalk, gutter, street, park or other public or private area. Fines can range from $100.00 - $500.00 or up to 90 days in jail for the first offense.

Downtown is our neighborhood. Let's keep it clean, green and healthy. All collateral materials mentioned above will be available in the CID Guide office at 912 Olive Street after April 14, 2008. To be a part of the Downtown Canine Litter campaign launch weekend, click here. To report vandalism or maintenance needs for the bag dispensers or for more information, call or e-mail Kelly Yeager at 314-436-6500 x 233.

Downtown Guides Equipped with New Technology

The Downtown Guide Team has been a much welcomed and appreciated program in downtown St. Louis for many years now. We continue to receive compliments from locals and tourists regarding the effectiveness of the guides program as well as letters to how helpful they have been.

The Downtown Guides are now equipped with handheld computer systems called Eponic. The Eponic system allows the Guides to efficiently report their customer and business contacts, access the full downtown merchant and business lists and provide printed walking and driving directions to area attractions. The customer simply lets the Downtown Guide know where they would like to go, the Guide pulls up the information and then can give a printed coupon to the customer. For more information on the Eponic System, contact Ken Gabel via e-mail or 314.436.6500 ext. 226.  To have your downtown business/restaurant/store/attraction logo or coupon on the Eponic customer print out, contact Shuntaé Shields Ryan for fee information by clicking here.

 National Library Week

Mayor Francis G. Slay will kick off National Library Week (April 13-19) by declaring it St. Louis Public Library Day at Central Library. The proclamation will be made on April 15th at a press conference located at the Central Library, 1301 Olive Street. At the press conference the St. Louis Public Library will be recognized for their contributions to the community and new banners will be unveiled displaying the library's new signature imagery, designed by Los Angeles artist Noah Woods. The banners will hang on both the front and back of the Central Library's exterior, facing Olive and Locust streets.

Now celebrating its 50th year, National Library Week recognizes the efforts libraries and librarians make toward the betterment of the communities they serve. Several of the library's branches are hosting special programming next week, designed to educate patrons about the library's resources and encourage them to join the circle of knowledge.
