Focus on Downtown Series
The Holden Public Policy Forum at Webster University has teamed up with FOCUS St. Louis to kick off a new program dedicated to focusing on Downtown Issues. This speaker series, FOCUS on Downtown with the Holden Public Policy Forum, aims to get people to come downtown more often, foster a dialogue about misconceptions, challenges and solutions, and realize the area’s importance in the health of the region. The roster of guest speakers are comprised of local media personalities, including: McGraw Milhaven (KTRS), Carol Daniel (KMOX), Mike Owens (KSDK), and Jo Mannies (The Beacon). In addition to discussing regional specific issues, local Missouri wines will be available for sample after each program. For dates and times, click here.

New Downtown Event - Idiotarod
The Downtown CID will produce the first ever St. Louis Idiotarod on March 5/6, 2010. This event is produced in other cities around the world including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago; and, honors the Alaskan tradition of the Iditarod in which dogs pull a sled and musher across the Iditarod Trail. The downtown St. Louis event is similar, except imagine replacing the dogs with people and the sled with shopping carts, put it in downtown St. Louis and add a heavy dose of weirdness. Teams of five people will have a theme that is reflective of their cart and costumes as they venture throughout downtown hitting checkpoints and completing challenges to win prizes. One of the challenges will include collecting food for a local charity. The Friday race will be a Corporate Challenge with teams representing downtown businesses. The Saturday race is open to all. In the spirit of the Alaskan Iditarod the race will go on regardless of rain, sleet, snow, ice, wind, or hail. . For more information and updates, click here or to find us on Facebook search for: Downtown St. Louis Idiotarod. Any other questions, contact Lindsey Schmid by clicking here.

National Wear Red Day
The American Heart Association is encouraging everyone to wear red on their national Wear Red Day on February 5, 2010. The red dress and the color red are symbols for women and heart disease and the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement. Thousands of people, employees at more than 10,000 companies, national and local news anchors, and talk-show hosts will wear red to support the cause. Wearing red on National Wear Red Day helps increase awareness about the importance of speaking up against this often preventable disease. And, by making a donation, you can help us raise money for critical heart research and education programs. Wear red, spread the word and save lives. To join other downtown businesses and landmarks in going red, call Sara at 692-5674 for a free Wear Red Day Kit. On National Wear Red Day make a choice to live a heart-healthy life — and take action! Downtown Gift Card Program
Gift card sales brought holiday cheer to many who take advantage of the wide array of amenities, attractions, restaurants and more in downtown St. Louis!! In late November, the Downtown Community Improvement District launched the Downtown Gift Card which can be redeemed at more than 120 downtown establishments, restaurants and service providers. To date, we’ve sold over 1,000 cards and put more than $30,000 into the downtown economy.

Remember the gift card is a year-round program and is also an excellent gift to give a special someone for Valentine’s Day. The card can be used exclusively with downtown merchants as a means for downtown workers, residents and employers to support and keep our downtown successful! To purchase individual gift cards or review a list of participating merchants, click here. For more information or corporate purchases, contact Matt Schindler by clicking here.

Recommendations for Tree Well Construction and Tree Planting
The Downtown St. Louis Community Improvement District’s (CID) recently completed 2009 street tree inventory is showing information that can greatly increase the health and growth of downtown trees. For example, certain popular tree species presently planted are not surviving and many downtown tree wells are prone to sidewalk damage due to the tree roots. Many may not realize that downtown St. Louis businesses have access to Kelly Yeager, Landscape Supervisor of the CID, who is a Municipal Tree Specialist/Certified Arborist. To access the detailed street tree inventory report, click here. For a quick list of recommendations, click here.

If you are planning on improving the street in front of your property or business, consult the Downtown Streetscape Plan. You may qualify for tree planting if you install new tree wells within the CID that conforms to these recommendations. For more information, contact Kelly Yeager at 436.6500 ext. 233 or click here.

Winter Plantings
This year the CID is using a variety of winter plantings in the planters we presently maintain. Plantings included dwarf spruces and junipers along Washington Avenue, hollies on Tucker, along with a handful of evergreen bough cuttings on parts of Olive. Plant material for spring 2010 has already been ordered. As usual, the hanging baskets will be planted starting in February and growing out in the City greenhouses. For more information, contact Kelly Yeager at 436.6500 ext. 233 or click here.
